Waverley Abbey has a remarkable history as a site of Christian prayer and worship for over 1,300 years. The land was dedicated in 688AD as a place of prayer and witness. In 1128AD it’s where the first Cistercian monastery in Britain was built, whose ruins can still be seen today.
St Catherine's Hill is a hill south of Guildford in Surrey, England, with a ruined chapel on its top.The name is derived from the chantry chapel, a ruined ancient monument on top of the hill. This was probably a chapel of ease associated with St Nicolas Church in Guildford and was built in the early 14th century by the rector of the church, Richard de Wauncey. A five-day fair has been held here historically, licensed by King Edward II in 1308.
After the Battle of Hastings in 1066 William led his army to Canterbury and then sacked towns along the Pilgrims' Way, including Guildford. Later William, or one of his barons, built Guildford Castle. There is no record of it in the Domesday Book of 1086, so construction probably started after that date

Leith Hill in southern England is the highest summit of the Greensand Ridge, approximately 6.7 km southwest of Dorking, Surrey and 40.5 km southwest of central London. It reaches 294 m above sea level, and is the second highest point in southeast England
The beautiful St Martha’s Church (also known as St Martha-on-the-Hill) is a listed grade II Historic building. Perched on the top of the hill on the North Downs Way National Trail, the building is accessible only by foot. It is the only church in Surrey to be on the Pilgrims’ Way and featured briefly in the 1944 film A Canterbury Tale. A 12th-century church existed here before falling into ruin by the 18th century
The Wey was one of the first rivers in England to be made navigable; the River Wey Navigation opened in 1653, with 12 locks between Weybridge and Guildford, and the Godalming Navigation, with a further four locks, was completed in 1764. Commercial traffic ceased as late as 1983 and the Wey Navigation and the Godalming Navigation were donated to the National Trust in 1964 and 1968 respectively.
Hankley Common is a 560-hectare (1,400-acre) nature reserve and filming location in the south-west of Elstead in Surrey. The site is part of the Thursley, Hankley and Frensham Commons Special Area of Conservation,[1] Special Protection Area[2] and Site of Special Scientific Interest.[3] The site has woodland and lowland heath with heather and gorse. Birds include nightjars and Dartford warblers and there are other fauna such as adders and common lizards.[4]
Chantry Woods sit just south of Guildford in the Surrey Hills Hills National Landscape. There are several paths through the woods, but if you head towards the southern side of the woods you will find some spectacular open views and places for picnics. Ideal for dog walking and nature seekers
